Sustainability Gamification
CASE NR.4-2024/25
Multiple
200+ participants
1+ year timeline 2024-25
Between 2024-2025, I had the privilege to learn from educators using games to teach sustainability in terms of: waste behaviours, upcycling, recycling etiquette, garbage cleanup in parks, and generosity experiments. I also led a week-long series of sustainability workshops with 4 other post-graduate students at Seneca College, published on the Seneca Knowledge Mobilization Hub, in part to mitigate climate anxiety among young people. All in all, I probably saw games among 200+ people, both physical and virtual.
When I became a City of Toronto Climate Action Champion, I studied the City of Toronto Climate Change Perceptions Research study, and now truly appreciate the critical role of psychology, and gamified learning in the future of sustainability. I am very comfortable designing games and simulations now for young people, after 1+ year observing and practicing.
Next Steps
I will design a project for the After2030 What Comes Next for the Sustainable Development Agenda? Please let me know if you want to be involved. Over the next few years, the global development community will be laying the groundwork for what comes after the SDGs.
